This one will need to make it into my track layout...
This unfortunate incident happened while I was working as a turn marshall at Moroso in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. The owner of this Bayside 935 was showing the course to the gentleman who was to be driving the car before the day actually started. They were going slow around the course and in turn three, got a wheel off the outside of the turn. The track had recently been paved and there was a good 6" of drop-off on the edges. In trying to get the car back on the track, he turned the wheel hard right. It took a second, but when those monster slicks grabbed, they grabbed hard, shot them across the track and into the drainage canal on the inside of the course. The car had just been rebuilt, and had miles (or in this case, feet) on the engine equal to the distance from the paddock to turn three of Moroso, or a little over a half mile.
We were all eating breakfast, and getting ready to deploy to our turn stations when someone said "Was that a splash?!" We all got very quiet for a second, realized we didn't hear the engine anymore, and jumped into our cars and sped around the course until we spotted the skid marks and a dripping driver standing next to the course. When we all got there, the owner was sitting on the roof in waist-deep water with his head in his hands. I wished I had my camera for THAT shot...
They did manage to get it started later in the day, and the only serious damage was an ego and the loss of a race weekend.
Vous en savez autant que moi maintenant...
